The Benefits of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) Lathe Inserts

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) lathe inserts offer a variety of benefits to machinists and engineers. PCD is a type of synthetic diamond that has been specifically designed for machining applications, and is suitable for turning and milling operations. PCD inserts are designed to last up to 50 times longer than standard carbide inserts.

The first major benefit of PCD inserts is their increased longevity. PCD inserts can last for up to 50 times longer than their carbide counterparts, meaning fewer tool changes and less downtime. This makes them ideal for high-volume production runs or for machining operations that require tight tolerances. Additionally, PCD inserts produce a finer finish than carbide, APKT Insert which can result in a better product overall.

PCD inserts also offer improved precision and accuracy, which can be beneficial for machining operations that require high levels of precision. These inserts are also less prone to breakage or chipping, meaning less waste and scrap. PCD inserts are also more resistant to wear from abrasion and heat, making them ideal for high-temperature and abrasive environments.

Finally, PCD inserts are more cost-effective than other types of cutting tools. Though the initial cost of PCD inserts is higher than carbide, their increased durability and performance more than make up for the added expense. In addition, the use of PCD inserts can lower the cost of producing the product since the process is faster and there is less downtime due to fewer tool changes.

Overall, PCD lathe inserts offer a variety of benefits that make them an ideal choice for machining operations. Their increased Cutting Tool Carbide Inserts longevity, accuracy, and resistance to wear make them an efficient and cost-effective option for any machinist or engineer.

What’s the Process of Iron Smelting?

Ironmaking methods mainly include blast furnace method, direct reduction method, smelting reduction method, etc. the principle is that the reduced pig iron is obtained by physicochemical reaction of ore in a specific atmosphere (reducing substances Co, H2, C; appropriate temperature, etc.). In addition to a small part of pig iron used for casting, the vast majority is used as steel-making raw materials.

Blast furnace ironmaking is the main method of modern ironmaking and an important link in iron and steel production. Due to good technical and economic indicators, simple process, large production capacity, high labor productivity and low energy consumption, iron produced by blast furnace process accounts for more than 95% of the world’s total iron production.

Blast furnace is similar to a cylindrical furnace, its outside is covered with steel plate, and its inner wall is lined with firebrick. The whole furnace is built on a deep concrete foundation.

During the production of blast furnace, iron ore, coke and slag making flux (limestone) are loaded from the top of the furnace, and preheated air is blown into the tuyere located at the lower part of the furnace along the circumference of the furnace. At high temperature, carbon monoxide and hydrogen generated by the combustion of carbon in coke and oxygen blown into the air remove oxygen from iron ore in the process of rising in the furnace, so as to obtain iron. The molten iron is discharged from the taphole.

Non reducing impurities in iron ore combine with limestone and other fluxes to form slag, which is discharged from slag port. The gas produced is exported from the top of the furnace and used as the fuel of hot blast furnace, heating furnace, coke oven and boiler after dust removal.

Raw materials: iron ore, solvent, fuel Iron ore

It is difficult to meet the requirements of blast furnace smelting in terms of chemical composition, physical state and other aspects of naturally mined ore. It must be prepared and treated by crushing, screening, beneficiation, briquetting and mixing to supply blast furnace with high grade, uniform composition and particle size.

There are four kinds of iron ore commonly used in metallurgical industry.

Mineral TypesMain componentsTheoretical content of Iron自然含铁量
HematiteFe2O370%50%~60%
magnetiteFe3O472.4%40%~70%

solvent

Gangue in ore and ash in fuel contain some compounds with high melting point (for example, the melting point of SiO2 is 1625 ℃ and that of Al2O3 is 2050 ℃). They can not be melted into liquid at the smelting temperature of blast furnace, so they can not be well separated from molten iron. At the same time, the operation of furnace is difficult.

The purpose of adding flux is to form low melting point slag with these high melting point compounds, so as to completely liquefy at the smelting temperature of blast furnace and maintain considerable fluidity, so as to achieve the purpose of good separation from metal and ensure the quality of pig iron.

According to the properties of flux, it can be divided into basic flux and acid flux. Which flux to use depends on the properties of gangue in ore and ash in fuel. Since most gangues in natural ores are acidic and the ash content of coke is VNMG Insert acidic, alkaline fluxes, such as limestone, are usually used. Acid fluxes are rarely used.

Fuel

The heat needed by blast furnace smelting mainly depends on the combustion of fuel. At the same time, the fuel also plays the role of reducing agent in the combustion process, so the fuel is one of the main raw materials for blast furnace smelting. The commonly used fuel is mainly coke, anthracite and semi coke.

Physical and chemical process: reduction reaction at high temperature + slagging reaction

The purpose of blast furnace smelting is to reduce iron from iron ore and remove impurities. In the whole smelting process, the most important is the reduction of iron and slagging reaction.

In addition, it is accompanied by a series of other complex physical and chemical reactions, such as evaporation of water and SNMG Insert volatile matter, decomposition of carbonate, carbonization and melting of iron, reduction of other elements, etc., which can only be realized at a certain temperature. Therefore, the smelting process also needs fuel combustion as a necessary condition.

Combustion of fuel

C+O2→CO2

Decomposition of burden

Evaporation of water and decomposition of crystal water; elimination of volatiles; decomposition of carbonate.

Reduction reaction in blast furnaceReduction of iron

In blast furnace, iron is not directly reduced from high valence oxide, but through a process of reduction from high valence oxide to low valence oxide, and then from low valence oxide to iron: Fe2O3 → Fe3O4 → FeO → Fe

The reduction of iron mainly depends on carbon monoxide gas and solid carbon as reducing agent. The reduction of carbon monoxide is usually called indirect reduction, and the reduction of solid carbon is called direct reduction.

The total reaction of indirect reduction is 3fe2o3 + 9co → 6fe + 9co2

The total reaction of direct reduction is 3fe2o3 + C → 2fe3o4 + Co

Carbonization of iron

The iron reduced from the ore is solid spongy, and its carbon content is very low, usually less than 1%. Because co decomposes at a lower temperature, and the decomposed C has a strong activity, when it contacts with iron, it is easy to form iron carbon alloy.

Therefore, the solid sponge iron begins to carburize at a lower temperature (400 ℃~ 600 ℃). The chemical reaction is as follows: 2CO + 3Fe → Fe3C + CO2 or 3Fe (liquid) + C (solid) → Fe3C

Slagging process

Slagging is a process in which gangue in ore and ash in fuel are combined with flux and removed from blast furnace. There are two kinds of slag formation in blast furnace

When smelting with ordinary acid ore, the flux is loaded into the blast furnace in the form of limestone, and the Cao in the flux can not be in close contact with the acid oxides in the ore. therefore, the slag initially formed is mainly fe2sio4 formed by SiO2, Al2O3 and a part of reduced FeO. Due to the existence of FeO in the slag, the melting point of the slag is reduced, and the slag has good fluidity. In the process of falling down (which is also the process of temperature rising), the FeO contained in the slag is gradually reduced and lost, while the content of Cao increases, and finally the final slag flows into the hearth.

When smelting with self fluxing ore, because the ore contains more Cao, and it can be in good contact with acidic SiO2, Cao immediately participates in the slagging reaction at the beginning of smelting, especially when smelting with self fluxing sinter, Cao forms slag with SiO2, Al2O3, etc. as early as in the sintering process, so the CaO content in the primary slag of this kind of ore is higher The composition of slag also changes little in the process of slag reduction.

Blast furnace products

The main products of blast furnace smelting are pig iron and ferroalloy, and the by-products are slag, gas and furnace dust.

pig iron

Pig iron is an iron carbon alloy with more than 2% carbon, which also contains Si, Mn, s, P and other impurities.

Pig iron can be divided into two categories according to its use and composition. One is steel-making pig iron: the carbon in the pig iron exists in the form of compound, and its cross section is silver white, also known as white iron; the other is casting pig iron: it is directly used to make machine parts.

ferroalloy

Iron and any kind of metal or nonmetal alloy are called ferroalloy (some are also called alloy pig iron). There are many kinds of ferroalloys, such as ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, ferrochrome, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, etc.

Slag, gas and dust

Slag, gas and dust are by-products of blast furnace. They were discarded as waste before, but now they are widely used in building materials.

The development of quantum dots – from definition to application

The development of nanotechnology has played a crucial role in scientific research in recent decades. The endless nanomaterials are now widely used in many fields from catalysis to biomedicine. Among various nanomaterials, colloidal nanocrystals may be one of the most important branch materials, and it has strong application prospects in many fields. Paul Alivisatos of the University of California at Berkeley has done a lot of groundbreaking work in the nano-field. He made such a question in the inaugural issue of the famous journal Nano Letters [1]: Why can such a specific scale range define one? Science and a scientific journal? What is the special point of such a compelling nanometer scale? Here, we have compiled a small footnote for trying to solve this problem by summarizing the development of quantum dots (which is what Paul Alivisatos played a pivotal role in the development of quantum dot materials) in various fields. Contents hide 11. Definition 22.Led 33. Living imaging 44.Cancer treatment 55.Artificial photosynthesis 66.Perovskite quantum dot 77.Summary1. DefinitionIn general, colloidal nanocrystals are fragments of a crystal having a size of 1-100 nm in a metastable form in solution. Because of its physical size and the critical size of many properties, considerable surface atomic ratio, many properties of colloidal nanocrystals show a unique phenomenon related to size [3]. Traditionally, colloidal nanocrystals are mainly classified into noble metal colloidal nanocrystals and semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals. According to the classical quantum confinement effect, when the geometric radius of the semiconductor colloidal nanocrystal is smaller than the exciton Boole radius of the bulk material, the energy levels of the valence band and the conduction band will appear in a discrete distribution form. It has to be related to size. Thus, classical studies have referred to semiconductor nanocrystals with radius sizes less than or close to the exciton Boer radius as quantum dots.

Figure 1 Structure of quantum dots (surface and core) [2]

Figure 2 TEM image of monodisperse CdSe nanocrystals [4]At the initial stage of development of quantum dots, research has focused on the field of metal chalcogenides. In 1993, MIT’s Bawendi group [4] injected organometallic compounds into high-temperature solvents, and the compounds were thermally decomposed and nucleated in solution to obtain metal chalcogenides such as cadmium selenide (CdSe) with good dispersibility. Nanocrystalline. These high-quality semiconductor nanocrystals have a diameter size distribution in the range of about 1 nm to 12 nm, have a uniform crystal structure, and exhibit size-dependent light emission and absorption characteristics. This is an early classic of the systematic study of quantum dots in the rapid development of semiconductor nanocrystal research. However, after decades of development research, the concept of quantum dots has also been extended from the original semiconductor nanocrystals, and nowadays, materials such as perovskite quantum dots, carbon quantum dots, and inorganic quantum dots without cadmium have become Research hotspots. Therefore, the application of these emerging materials will also be involved.2.Led

Figure 3 QLED inkjet printing [7]As early as 1994, P. Alivisatos et al. first combined CdSe quantum dots with semiconducting polymers for the manufacture of novel organic-inorganic hybrid electroluminescent diodes. By developing new assembly techniques, researchers have constructed multi-layer quantum dots that enable charge transport. The advantages of traditional bulk inorganic semiconductor diodes in thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability have also been retained [5]. However, the organic layer in these devices will have very low carrier mobility and nanocrystalline conductivity, which directly drags the efficiency of the photovoltaic device. By around 2006, S. J. Rosenthal [6] and others prepared an ultra-small CdSe nanocrystal as a white phosphor. The quantum dots are very uniform in size and large in specific surface area, which significantly increases the probability of electrons and holes interacting on the surface of the nanocrystals, so that the Stokes shift of the nanocrystals can reach 40-50 nm and exhibit broad spectrum emission in the visible region. Characteristics. The invention of this new white phosphor has greatly expanded the application prospects of quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). In recent years, laboratory preparation of QLED prototype devices has gradually matured in design and mechanism research [7], and the promotion of industrial production of large-area RGB pixel arrays has also become a research hotspot. Nowadays, the development of patterning technologies such as inkjet printing and transfer printing has laid the foundation for the maturity of QLED’s large-area display technology, and has significantly promoted the commercial application of QLED.3. Living imaging

Figure 4 Carbon dots for in vivo optical imaging [11]Fluorescence is a tool that has a wide range of applications in the biological field. Compared with traditional fluorescent dyes, quantum dots have the characteristics of high emission brightness, large molar extinction coefficient, and broad absorption spectrum, and can be used as a substitute for fluorescent dyes or fluorescent proteins. P. Alivisatos et al. [8] used quantum dots for fibroblast labeling in 1998, which has opened up the application of quantum dots as fluorescent probes for biomedical imaging. Nie Shuming’s research team also made pioneering work in the field of imaging. The research team not only used the covalent coupling of zinc sulfide/cadmium selenide core-shell quantum dots with biomacromolecules as early as 1998 to achieve ultra-sensitive non-isotopic tracing [9], they also realized for the first time in living animals. Tumor targeting and imaging studies [10] have developed diagnostic studies for quantum dot disease. Inorganic nanocrystals, especially cadmium-based nanocrystals, can cause toxic effects on organisms, so the synthesis of quantum dots with excellent biocompatibility has been a research hotspot. For example, research on synthetic copper-based or silver-based quantum dots can effectively reduce the biological toxicity of materials. In addition, the development of metal-free quantum dots is also an important strategy. The carbon dots synthesized by Ya-Ping Sun et al. still retain considerable fluorescence intensity after injection into mice [11]. In addition to toxicity, optimizing the emission region of quantum dots to better conform to near-infrared bio-optical windows is also a challenge for nanocrystalline medical applications.4.Cancer treatment

Figure 5 Singlet oxygen generation mechanism of graphene quantum dots [13]Photodynamic therapy has now evolved into an FDA-approved cancer treatment program. In general, photosensitizer drugs are stimulated in the body to produce reactive oxygen species that kill tumor cells. However, the photosensitizer is poor in water solubility and tends to lose photochemical activity due to aggregation in the body. In 2003, the Burda team [12] first explained the development potential of CdSe quantum dots as a photosensitizer. The optical properties of quantum dots determine that it is a powerful photon absorber that transfers energy efficiently and its surface functionalization enhances dispersion in the body. In order to solve the problem of toxicity, Wang Pengfei of the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the joint team of Wenjun Zhang of the City University of Hong Kong [13] found that graphene quantum dots can efficiently produce singlet oxygen and act on living tumors to kill tumors. In addition, recent research has extended quantum dot materials to the application of tumor photothermal therapy and radiation therapy.5.Artificial photosynthesis

Figure 6 Application advantages of quantum dots in the field of artificial photosynthesis [14]According to the quantum confinement effect, the band gap of the quantum dots can be artificially adjusted by an appropriate method, so that the absorption emission region of the quantum dots can cover the entire visible light spectral range as compared with the corresponding bulk materials and molecular dyes. Moreover, the exciton generation and charge separation effects of quantum dots are more controllable, so the application of quantum dots in the field of catalysis is also a very important issue. In the 1980s, research on the modification of quantum dots to platinum or ruthenium oxide [15] and other promoters can catalyze hydrolysis. Since then, researchers have been working on building quantum dot-based artificial photosynthesis and continually optimizing its performance. In 2012, an important breakthrough was made in the photocatalytic hydrogen production of quantum dot catalytic systems. Krauss et al. [16] found that after the CdSe quantum dots were coated with lipoic acid, the quantum dots were easily bonded to the nickel ion-lipoic acid system to form a hybrid catalytic system. Under visible light irradiation, this system can maintain active hydrogen production for at least 360 hours (quantum yield up to 36%), greatly improving the application prospects of non-precious metal catalysts. So far, after decades of development of artificial photosynthesis systems have entered the stage of exploring mass production and large-scale use, quantum dots have established advantages over precious metals in terms of source of acquisition and production cost, but the development of cadmium-free environment Friendly and visible light-responsive quantum dots (such as zinc selenide quantum dots) remain a challenge for implementing new energy conversion systems.6.Perovskite quantum dot

Figure 7 Structure and properties of bismuth-lead halide perovskite quantum dots [17]So far, metal sulfide nanocrystals are the best-developed and most in-depth quantum dot materials, and they have the widest range of applications. In the past five years, quantum dots with a crystal structure of perovskite have become an emerging research hotspot. This new type of quantum dot is no longer a metal sulfide. Instead, it is a metal halide. A metal halide with a perovskite structure exhibits unique properties such as superconductivity and ferroelectric properties that are not available in conventional quantum dots. The earliest organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite nanocrystals have the disadvantage of being extremely sensitive to environmental factors such as oxygen and humidity, which limits the development of this material. Almost at the same time, Kovalenko’s research group [17] pioneered the preparation of all-inorganic bismuth-lead halide perovskite quantum dots in 2014. This colloidal quantum dot has a cubic perovskite crystal structure, while the exciton Bohr radius It does not exceed 12 nm and therefore exhibits dimensionally related spectral properties. This emerging material combines the advantages of quantum dots and perovskite materials to extend the potential applications of quantum dots. In the past year or two, perovskite quantum dots have not only been used in photovoltaic cells and optoelectronic display devices, but have not yet been manufactured. New laser materials [18] offer new strategies.7.SummaryQuantum dots are representative materials for explaining the “size effect” of so-called nanomaterials. They have been applied more widely in more and more fields, from optoelectronic devices to photocatalysis to biodetection, covering almost the present and Future daily needs. However, due to space limitations, many quantum dot family member materials such as silicon quantum dots have not been mentioned, and the introduction of material applications has remained in representative research. By summarizing these classic research paradigms, it is expected that the development of quantum dots can be summarized to some extent.ReferencesWelcome to Nano Letters. Nano Letters. 2001, 1, 1.? R. How To Select Tungsten Carbide Milling Cutter Coating By 5 Elements

The correct surface treatment (coating) of small circular tools can improve the tool life, reduce the processing cycle time and improve the surface quality. However, it may be a confusing and laborious work to correctly select the tool coating according to the processing needs. Each coating has both advantages and disadvantages in machining. If an inappropriate coating is selected, the tool life may be lower than that of uncoated tools, and sometimes even more problems than before the coating.

At present, there are many kinds of tool coatings to choose from, including PVD coating, CVD coating and composite coating alternately coated with PVD and CVD. Fulandi brand milling cutter and tungsten steel milling cutter each coated milling cutter adopts the world’s advanced Swiss PLATIT coating technology, which makes the hardness and service life of the tool more than double in cutting. It is beneficial to determine which coating to choose in machining engineering.

Contents hide 1Hardness OF MILLING CUTTER 2Wear resistance OF MILLING CUTTER 3Surface lubricity 4Oxidation temperature 5Adhesion resistance OF MILLING CUTTER 6gENERAL application of coatingHardness OF MILLING CUTTER

The high surface hardness brought by coating is one of the best ways to improve the tool life. Generally speaking, the higher the hardness of the material or surface, the longer the service life of the tool. Titanium nitride carbide (TiCN) has higher hardness than titanium nitride (TIN). Due to the increase of carbon content, the hardness of TiCN is increased by 33%, and its hardness variation range is about HV30 ~ 04000. The application of CVD diamond coating with surface hardness up to hv90 on cutting tools has been relatively mature. Compared with PVD coated tools, the service life of CVD diamond coated tools is increased by 10 ~ 20 times. The high hardness and cutting speed of diamond coating can be 2 ~ 3 times higher than that of uncoated tools, making it a good choice for cutting non-ferrous materials.

Wear resistance OF MILLING CUTTER

Wear resistance refers to the ability of the coating to resist wear. Although the hardness of some workpiece materials may not be too high, in the production process

The elements added in and the process used may cause the cutting edge of the tool to crack or blunt.

Surface lubricity

High friction coefficient will increase the cutting heat, resulting in shortened coating life and even failure. Reducing the friction coefficient can greatly prolong the tool life. The coating surface with fine and smooth or regular texture is helpful to reduce the cutting heat, because the smooth surface can quickly slide the chips away from the rake face and reduce the generation of heat. Compared with uncoated tools, coated tools with better surface lubricity can also be processed at a higher cutting speed, thus further avoiding high-temperature fusion welding with workpiece materials.

Oxidation temperature

Oxidation temperature refers to the temperature at which the coating begins to decompose. The higher the oxidation temperature is, the more favorable it is for cutting at high temperature. Although the normal temperature hardness of TIA coated layer N may be lower than that of TiC coated layer N, it has been proved that it is much more effective than TiCN in high temperature processing. The reason why the coating layer N of TIA can still maintain its hardness at high temperature is that a layer of alumina can be formed between the tool and the chip, and the alumina layer can transfer heat from the tool to the workpiece or chip. Compared with high-speed steel tools, the cutting speed of cemented carbide tools is usually higher, which makes TiAlN become the coating of cemented carbide tools. Cemented carbide drills and end mills Carbide Inserts usually use this PVD TiAlN coating

Adhesion resistance OF MILLING CUTTER

The anti adhesion of the coating can prevent or reduce the chemical reaction between the tool and the processed material, and prevent the workpiece material from depositing on the tool. When machining non-ferrous metals (such as aluminum, brass, etc.), chip nodules often occur on the tool, resulting in tool breakage or workpiece size out of tolerance. Once the processed material begins to adhere to the tool, the adhesion will continue to expand. For example, when processing aluminum workpiece with forming tap, the aluminum adhered to the tap will increase after processing each hole, so that the tap diameter will become too large, causing the workpiece to be scrapped due to out of tolerance size. Coatings with good adhesion resistance can play a good role TCGT Insert even in processing occasions with poor coolant performance or insufficient concentration.

gENERAL application of coating

Achieving cost-effective application of coatings may depend on many factors, but for each specific processing application, there is usually only one or several feasible coating options. Whether the coating and its characteristics are selected correctly may mean the difference between significantly improved processability and almost no improvement. Cutting depth, cutting speed and coolant may affect the application effect of tool coating. Because there are many variables in the processing of a workpiece material, one of the good ways to determine which coating to choose is through trial cutting.
