Tormach Launches New Automatic Tool Changer

Tormach Inc., a leading supplier of affordable and compact CNC machines, has announced it has introduced a new Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) for its 24R CNC Router. The new ATC features an ISO20 ATC Spindle with a 10-tool rack and automatic lifting dust shoe.

The company says its new ATC is a valuable addition to the 24R CNC router, and it is integrated into Tormach’s PathPilot CNC controller. Ideal for premium woodworkers and sign makers, the 24R is designed to accurately cut a wide variety of materials including woods, plastics, aluminum and more. With an Drilling Inserts advanced control, rigid cast-iron bed, welded steel stand, water-cooled chiller, integrated vacuum table and more than a 2' × 4' work envelope, it is the perfect choice for 2D and 3D cutting needs.

The ATC also features repeatable tool lengths, which provides faster tool changes. The new lifting dust shoe feature enables users to check the router’s cutting action while the machine is running and leading into a cut.

Spindle specifications of the 24R ATC include 1.5 kW, 10,000 – 24,000 rpm, ISO20 spindle taper, an integrated power drawbar, an integrated PDB (power draw bar) open sensor, a positive air pressure spindle nose seal and liquid cooling. ATC rack specifications 10-tool capacity, a max tool diameter of 1.75" and a max tool gauge length of 4.25".

As with all Tormach products, customers VBMT Insert will receive free remote technical support for the 24R ATC via email, phone and video chat.

Understanding CBN Inserts Applications, Benefits, and Considerations

CBN inserts are cutting tools that use Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) as the cutting edge material. CBN is a synthetic material that is extremely hard and has excellent thermal and chemical stability, making it an ideal material for cutting hard materials such as hardened steel, cast iron, and superalloys.

CBN inserts are commonly used in the machining industry for turning, milling, and boring applications. They are highly valued for their ability to maintain their cutting edge and cutting speed even under high temperatures and high speeds. This results in increased productivity, longer tool life, and improved surface finish of machined parts.

CBN inserts are available in a ECMN Grooving variety of shapes and sizes, and are typically used in high-precision machining applications. They can be used with a variety of cutting fluids, and are suitable for both wet and dry machining. However, they are generally more expensive than other cutting tools, such as carbide inserts, due to the cost of the CBN material.

Reasons of tool wear in metal cutting machining

In the metal cutting process, tool wear always occurs, tool wear and tool material, the nature of the work-piece material and cutting conditions are related.
Tool wear can be divided into two categories: normal wear and abnormal wear. In normal cutting conditions, the basic form of tool wear is shown as edge wear, front face wear, rear face wear and tip wear. Abnormal wear forms, manifested as tool breakage, plastic deformation and so on.

The main reasons of tool wear are as follows.
1, hard point wear Because the material contains some carbide, nitride, chip tumor residue and other quality point impurities.

2, bonding wear machining process, chip and tool contact surface at a certain temperature and pressure, plastic deformation and cold welding phenomenon, the tool surface bonding point is chip away and the wear occurs.

3, diffusion wear Due to the high temperature effect when cutting, the tool and the work-piece material in the alloy elements of mutual diffusion, and cause tool wear.

4, oxidation wear carbide tool cutting temperature of 700-800 ℃, some carbon in the tool, cobalt, titanium carbide, such as air oxidation, the formation of a layer of lower hardness in the tool surface oxide film, when the oxide film wear off in the tool surface caused by APKT Insert wear.

5, phase change wear in the cutting of high temperature, the tool metallurgical organization changes, thus causing a reduction in hardness caused by wear.

Tool in the intermittent cutting conditions, due to strong mechanical and thermal shock, more than the tool material strength, will cause tool breakage. Under the effect of alternating mechanical loads, the fatigue strength of the tool material is reduced, easily causing mechanical cracks and breakage.

There are many factors affecting tool life, which are mainly summarised in 5 aspects: work-piece material, tool material and its geometrical parameters, cutting dosage, tool sharpening quality, lubrication and cooling conditions.

Tungsten Alloy in Crankshaft Counterweight

Crankshaft is the part of an engine, which translates reciprocating linear piston motion into rotation.

In the engine, It is a necessary to use the counterweights to keep the balance of the reciprocating motion of each piston and connecting rod, as the parts of crankshafts usually. Tungsten heavy alloy is certainly considered as the most appropriate crankshaft material for its properties.

Therefore, tungsten heavy alloy parts can be used as counterweight in machines and vessels as well as aircraft, ships, yachts, space shuttles and anywhere need much heavy but little space, the tungsten heavy alloy crankshaft is widely used in high-performance engines (automobile, racing car, Cermet Inserts motor, fan, diesel, truck, yacht, jet, fan etc.)
